World Water Day – March 22, 2024

Water for Peace

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel
The theme of this year’s World Water Day, March 22, 2024, is Water for Peace. It’s a message that encourages everyone to cooperate in the usage  and sharing of water, creating a ripple effect that fosters harmony throughout the world.
****
It’s important for each person to take action to improve the way we use, conserve and manage the water that is essential to our daily lives. To be the change that makes a difference.
Rather than leaving it up to government and private organizations to preserve and protect the world’s water supply, we all need to become part of the process.
****
Having water-efficient plumbing fixtures and taking shorter showers can help. So can saving water by running full loads in the washing machine and dishwasher. Planting sustainable gardens that don’t need much water is another way.
When you think about it, there are many things you can do to improve your water use so that there is enough water for all.
****
And, World Water Day is the perfect time to do it…because every drop counts!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

From Cafe au Lait to Love

Kean coffee art

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

Would you like to go out for coffee? Why don’t you come inside for a cup of coffee? How many romances – in the movies and real life – have started with those words?

kissing

saudi arabia coffee setting

While much attention has been given to the link between chocolate and romance, coffee isn’t far behind. In addition to being the “think drink” many of us turn to for inspiration or when we’re on a deadline, coffee is also the lubricant of romance. Some may even say it is essential. SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel learned that in Saudi Arabia a woman may divorce her husband if he doesn’t keep her supplied with coffee. Talk about grounds for divorce.

The French, long associated with amour, created the French press coffee maker in the 1850s to brew the perfect coffee. The standard size press makes just the right amount for two.

Frenchpress-wiki

Josephine

A coffee aficionado herself, Paris Folies Bergère cabaret performer Josephine Baker (1906 – 1975) once said about the man she loved, “He was my cream, and I was his coffee. And when you poured us together, it was something.”

To find out more about the connection between coffee and couples, Dunkin Donuts commissioned a survey to take a closer look at the subject.

DD Love

Among the good news for the popular donut and coffee shop was that 50% of the survey respondents said they would rather receive a fresh cup of coffee from their sweetheart on Valentine’s Day than flowers. Along with this, 70% said they would have coffee as part of their Valentine’s Day lunch or dinner celebration. Nearly two-thirds said that they had gone out for coffee on a first date.

DSC05837 (2)

According to the survey, the most romantic flavors of coffee are vanilla (38%), mocha (16%) and caramel (15%). And, if you want to turn up the romantic heat, opt for a cappuccino. It was selected the most romantic beverage by 30%. And guys, a word to the wise, 31% of women said they would rather give up their sweetheart for a week than give up coffee for seven days. Ouch!

DD-Valentines-Day-Lattes

In the spirit of romance, Dunkin Donuts not only has its coffee pots and cappuccino makers ready to accommodate sweethearts year-round, but for Valentine’s Day it makes special heart-shaped donuts filled with Bavarian Kreme or Vanilla buttercreme.

Mr. Right (2)

On a first date, when you’re wondering if this is Mr. Right or Ms. Right, can your date’s coffee preference actually provide you with insight into his/her personality? According to Dr. Alan Hirsch, neurological director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, it most certainly can.

“Based on our work, people who take their coffee black tend to be lively, outgoing, and extroverted, thinking more about the present than the future,” Dr. Hirsch says. “People who add sweetener to their coffee are natural leaders, enjoy being in control, and expect the best from all. Those who take their coffee with cream are particularly social and engaging. And, those who add skim milk to their coffee most enjoy company and usually prefer to draw attention to others versus themselves.” So, pay attention if your date reaches for the Sweet and Low.

cream pouring into hot coffee (2)

Given what SurfWriter Girls discovered, there’s a good chance that coffee will be on your Valentine’s Day menu. In addition to Dunkin Donuts, there are many coffee houses to choose from in the OC. Of course there’s Starbucks. And, for something more locally-grown, head out to Old Town Seal Beach where you’ll find many coffee houses on and around Main Street.

DSC03024 (2)

Bogart’s, named after legendary screen star Humphrey Bogart, is just across from the Seal Beach Pier, which provides a romantic backdrop for your café au lait. And, with a life-size, replica of Bogie, known as much for his romance with actress Lauren Bacall as his films, standing by “looking at you, kid,” how can you go wrong?

Fika – The Perfect Coffee Break

A Swedish Cup of Comfort

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

For coffee break and cinnamon bun lovers Sweden is the place to be…especially on October 4th, National Cinnamon Bun Day!

SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel came across a tiny, blue-covered book, The Little Book of Fika, that tells how the Swedes have turned coffee breaks into a national obsession.

Not just one break, but two! A twice-daily ritual of comfort called “fika” – to have coffee – has been at the heart of Swedish culture since the early 1800s.

More than just a java jolt of caffeine, fika is a time to slow down, socialize, and focus on simple pleasures. The fika coffee break represents a state of contentment, a moment of happiness to be savored. The best fikas bring together friendly people, good coffee (of course!), and (whenever possible) cinnamon buns.

Cinnamon buns are so revered in Sweden that they designated a national day to celebrate them, October 4th.

So, make time for a coffee break, bite into a delicious cinnamon bun, and enjoy this comforting Swedish treat.

National Lighthouse Day – August 7, 2022

Let the Light Shine!

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

With today’s high-tech navigation equipment on ships, it’s easy to forget the first way America kept sailors and the nation safe was with lighthouses protecting our coasts and guiding sailors to shore with their beacons.

On the bicentennial of the 1789 Congressional Act supporting lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and public piers Congress designated August 7th as National Lighthouse Day, encouraging communities to open their lighthouses to the public and hold events to celebrate these historic sites.

Beautiful, bold and inspiring, America’s lighthouses continue to stand out in the night and to enhance our shorelines.

So, what better way is there to honor and celebrate these towering structures than by visiting one on National Lighthouse Day for a tour, event or picnic?

Let the light shine!

World Rainforest Day – June 22, 2022

An Adventure Awaits at Global Summit!

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

June 22nd is World Rainforest Day – a day to recognize and promote the importance of rainforests to the health and biodiversity of the planet.

Most people think of rainforests as covering vast regions of the world, but they only make up about 6% of the Earth’s land mass. These dense jungles, teeming with life, account for 50% of the world’s biodiversity, harboring plants and animals – many in danger of extinction – that can’t be found anywhere else.

Located in the tropics, rainforests play an essential role in keeping our planet healthy. Often called “the lungs of the world,” they absorb carbon dioxide and generate 20% of the world’s oxygen. Along with this, the vegetation and animal life found in rainforests have the potential to create new medicines that can save and improve lives.

For this year’s World Rainforest Day over 50 international organizations are coming together in a virtual Global Summit to talk about what rainforests do for us and how we can help to protect them.

The summit is free and open to all. Its theme is The Time is Now. Why not join in? It could be the adventure of a lifetime.

World Reef Day – June 1, 2022

Celebrate the Wonders Under the Sea!

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

Get ready to celebrate World Reef Day, June 1, 2022. In addition to being beautiful, the world’s coral reefs provide food and shelter to more than 25% of the ocean’s sea life.

Coral reefs protect shorelines from erosion, help to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air, and are a source of food and income to over half a billion people.

The Surfrider Foundation calls coral reefs “the crown jewels of our ocean” and asks all of us to help protect them by reducing pollution and the use of chemical sunscreens that wash off and contaminate the water.

On World Reef Day there will be beach activities and events to raise awareness of coral reefs and their importance to the planet.

So, dive in to discover more about these under the sea treasures!

World Water Day – March 22, 2022

Making the Invisible Visible

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

Water is essential to life. More valuable than gold or oil, it provides moisture and nutrients to man, animals and plants.

On World Water Day, March 22nd, the United Nations is focusing on Making the Invisible Visible and preserving the groundwater hidden from sight that makes up over 40% of the world’s supply of fresh water.

The United Nations is calling on the global community to take action to conserve and protect this vital water supply and to ensure that it is available for drinking, sanitation, and food production.

While waterfalls, lakes, rivers, and streams may be more noticeable and dramatic, the world’s groundwater is essential to maintain ecosystems, agriculture, and industry.

SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel learned that currently 2 billion people don’t have access to clean water. What’s more, the average distance people in developing countries walk to fetch water is almost 4 miles.

So, it’s important to recognize the essential role groundwater plays in providing water to the world and to help build awareness of that on World Water Day.

Linked to the phases of the moon, this year’s Lunar New Year celebrations around the world will last until February 15th, with the last day marked by the Lantern Festival, with displays of colorful paper lanterns. Often in the shapes of animals, the lanterns symbolize letting go of the past and transforming into something better in the new year.

To increase your good luck in 2022, turn on the lights at night to scare away ghosts and eat something sweet to ensure a sweeter year. To avoid bad luck, don’t wash your hair on New Year’s Day because that washes away good fortune.

The Year of the Tiger (one of the 12 Asian Zodiac signs representing each year) embodies personal vigor, focus, and physical activity. People born under the sign of the Tiger are known for their fiery passion, daring and fearlessness.

Whether you’re a tiger or not, make this a year to roar!

World Water Day 2021

March 22

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

What does water mean to you? The theme of this year’s World Water Day is Valuing Water.

The United Nations is asking people to stop and think about the value of water and what it means to us. A commodity that’s often overlooked…until there isn’t any of it, water is literally the fountain of our existence.

To ensure that clean water is available to all, now is the time to think about how we use it and what it means to the quality of our lives – for health, cooking, food production, manufacturing, enjoyment, and more.

The UN wants us to “Join the conversation!” Talk to our friends and family about the importance of water. And on social media – with the tags #WorldWaterDay and #Water2me.

This will help the UN and organizations around the world to come up with ways to ensure that the water is there when you turn on the tap.

Water is cool and refreshing. Water cleans and cooks our food. Water irrigates our fields. Water powers our factories. Water is beautiful to look at and fun to swim, boat and surf in.

Most important of all – Water is life.

Surfrider Splash It Forward in 2021

Clean the Beach Solo Style

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

The Surfrider Foundation Huntington/Seal Beach chapter is asking everyone to Splash It Forward in 2021 by making a splash video and donation to Surfrider to support its environmental causes.

The proceeds from this year’s annual Huntington Beach New Year’s Day Surf City Splash, with everyone running into the ocean to celebrate the new year, were designated to go to Surfrider.

But with public events on hold, instead of the ocean plunge, the Splash has gone virtual. To join in, just video yourself making a splash – jumping into the ocean or a pool, getting squirted by a hose, any way you want. Then post the video on your social media and tag it #SplashItForward.

After that, make a donation and ask your friends to do the same (even a small one helps) at splashitforward.com.

Even though we can’t get together for beach cleanups yet, Surfrider encourages you to do a #SoloBeachCleanup by yourself whenever you can, helping to keep the beach clean and sharing the stoke remotely by tagging @hsbsurfrider on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

It’s more important than ever to support organizations that are doing positive things. Splash It Forward and Solo Beach Cleanups let you do that…and still stay safe.

SurfWriter Girls wish everyone a healthy and happy 2021

World Water Day, March 22, 2020

Water and Climate Change

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

The theme for World Water Day, March 22nd, is “Water and Climate Change,” focusing on the link between water and changing climate conditions worldwide.

Climate change can affect our water supply so that some people don’t have water to drink or to use for personal hygiene and sanitation – things the UN says are universal rights.

It’s important to use water wisely on World Water Day and to support the United Nation’s efforts to encourage governments to “balance all of society’s water needs, while ensuring the poorest people don’t get left behind.”

Every drop must count.

Sustaining All Life on Earth

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) says the message of this year’s World Wildlife Day, March 3rd, is “Sustaining all life on Earth.”

World Wildlife Day is an opportunity to celebrate the beautiful and varied types of wild animals and plants around the world. Numerous events highlighting biodiversity and ways to sustain animal and plant life are scheduled.

At a time when 25% of the world’s animal species are currently threatened with extinction and natural ecosystems have declined by 47%, action is needed to protect them.

National Save the Eagles Day

January 10, 2020

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

Take a moment to celebrate one of nature’s most majestic birds, the eagle, on National Save the Eagles Day, January 10th

Revered in mythology and religion since ancient times, there are over 70 different species of eagle around the world, many of them on the Endangered Species List.

The Bald Eagle, symbol of the United States of America, was almost extinct until it became protected under the Endangered Species Act in 1978.

Now there are some 10,000 nesting pairs of Bald Eagles across the country. A conservation success story, the Bald Eagle recovered enough to be removed from the list in 2007, but is still protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

To keep the world’s eagles safe, notify wildlife authorities if you notice an eagle’s nest that has been disturbed or see an injured bird. It’s also important to support conservation efforts to protect wildlife habitats and migratory flight routes.

National Cocoa Day

December 13, 2019

December 13th is National Cocoa Day – the perfect time to settle around the fireplace and celebrate everyone’s favorite cold weather comfort drink.

Whether you call it hot cocoa or hot chocolate – one’s made with cocoa powder and the other with cocoa butter – we all agree that it’s just the thing to keep the cold away and put us in a relaxed mood.

Developed by the Mayas and Aztecs in Central America and Mexico 2000 years ago, the chocolate beverage was a favorite with the Aztec king Montezuma in the mid-1500s and became a sensation in European capitals when explorers brought it back from the New World.

In France, where chocolate is revered in all things from chocolates and pastries to dark rich hot chocolate (chocolat chaud), the drink served at Angelina of Paris is said to be the best. Iconic fashion designer Coco Chanel visited the bistro (started in 1903) daily just so she could savor its hot chocolate.

So, on December 13th bundle up, light the fire and make yourself a delicious cup of cocoa.

The antioxidants and flavonoids in it are good for your health…and it’s definitely in fashion!

Yago Dora and Sage Erickson Celebrate Wins

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

Brazilian Yago Dora and Californian Sage Erickson rode the Huntington Beach waves to victory on a day that required skill and patience to make the most of what the ocean offered.

Dora’s high-flying moves (posting the day’s top single score of 9.7) gave him the win and moved him into the #4 spot in the QS rankings. Thanking the crowd, he said it “gets me fired up to do my best and that’s what I did today.”

World Oceans Day – June 8th

Celebrating Blue; Celebrating Life

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

On World Oceans Day, June 8th, people around our blue planet will be celebrating and honoring the ocean that connects us all.

A healthy world ocean is critical to our survival. In the words of National Geographic explorer-in-residence, marine biologist Dr. Sylvia Earle: “No water, no life. No blue, no green.”

“Even if you never have the chance to see or touch the ocean, the ocean touches you with every breath you take, every drop of water you drink, every bite you consume. Everyone, everywhere is inextricably connected to and utterly dependent upon the existence of the sea.”

There will be events spanning the globe from the Santa Monica Aquarium, CA, to the Coralpalooza in Key Largo, Florida, the Marine Biology Institute of Piran, Italy, oceans festival in Thailand, movies on the beach in Curacao, and many more.

Plus, the National Wildlife Federation is holding a contest with Joel Harper, author of All the Way to the Ocean, asking children to write Facebook and Instagram posts about how they are protecting the ocean.

So, find a World Oceans Day event near you and join in the celebration!

Reduce Reuse Recycle Surf Off – May 18

Competition Puts Clean Ocean First

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

Environmentalist Seth Matson is on a mission to keep our oceans and beaches clean…stopping trash at its source on land before it reaches the water.

To accomplish his objective, Matson is hosting this year’s Reduce Reuse Recycle Surf Off in Huntington Beach, CA May 18th at 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.

More than a surfing competition, it’s an event that builds awareness about how we can keep trash, plastic and pollutants out of the upstream waterways that run to the sea.

Matson, founder of the non-profit group Drains to Ocean, has other organizations on board, including 5 Gyres Institute, the Sierra Club and Bolsa Chica Land Trust, to make it a fun and informative day for all with surf contests, educational activities, a beach cleanup, awards ceremony, and more.

SurfWriter Girls Sunny and Patti have seen firsthand what Matson is doing to protect the environment and know it’s up to all of us to help.

With eight million pieces of trash entering the ocean everyday, keeping the beaches clean is a big job.

Rising Tide Summit

Saving Ocean Reaches New Heights

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

“The ocean is the most powerful economic engine on earth,” says Vipe Desai, founder of the Rising Tide Summit being held on March 27 and 28 in SoCal at the Port of Los Angeles.

“Without a healthy ocean, there are no healthy people, planet or profits,” Desai points out, explaining why this year’s summit is so important. “Our goal is clear and simple. To chart a new course in ocean conservation.”

And, there’s no time to waste. With the ocean under siege from plastic pollution, coral bleaching, over-fishing, loss of habitat, and debris from inland water runoff we need to come up with solutions to reverse the damage that is occurring.

The summit’s topics include how business alliances can affect environmental causes, combating the plastics in the ocean problem, getting the environmental vote out, updates from the 5 Gyres Institute, and more. Among the speakers are leaders from science and industry, adventurer Alison Teal, and surfing World Champion Shaun Tomson.

SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel are excited that environmentalists from so many different fields are working together to come up with actionable solutions to protect our oceans.

That’s something we all can support!

International Year of the Reef

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

The International Coral Reef Initiative, a partnership of more than 60 nations and organizations around the world working to preserve coral reefs and related ecosystems, declared 2018 the International Year of the Reef.

This is the third time since the organization’s founding in 1994 that it has declared an International Year of the Reef and the goal is to create awareness about the dangers to the world’s coral reefs and to generate support for helping to preserve and protect them.

Coral reefs have had continued increases in bleaching (losing their nutrients) over the past three decades due to stress from climate and environmental changes. In effect, they are literally losing their colors – the pinks, oranges, yellows and blues that signify healthy reef systems.

The ICRI encourages governments, the private sector, non-profit organizations, and academia to join forces to share information and develop effective conservation strategies.

Healthy coral reefs are essential for the well-being of the planet because they support 25% of all marine life, providing habitats for countless organisms including over 4,000 species of fish. They also protect our shorelines from erosion and contribute to local communities’ fishing, travel and tourism economies.

NASA research scientist Liane Guild says,”Coral reefs are considered ‘canaries of the oceans,’ acting as an early warning system for marine ecosystems.” Like birds in a coal mine warning of dangerous gas, the reefs are sounding an environmental alert.

In 2018 we need to take notice.

Make the Season Bright!

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

December is the time to be of good cheer.

As Ebenezer Scrooge learns in Charles DIckens’ A Christmas Carol, the relationships we have with others and the good deeds we do are far more important than the wealth we acquire.

So, take time to catch some waves, mix and mingle…

Deck the Halls…

have charity toward others, and help make the world a better place.

Season’s Greetings to all and a Happy New Year!

National Cookie Day – 11/26 and 12/4

Celebrate America’s Favorite Treat

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

After Thanksgiving – just when you think you can’t eat another bite – get ready for National Cookie Day, November 26 and December 4.

That’s right – Two days to celebrate America’s favorite treat! “One day isn’t enough,” says SurfWriter Girl Sunny Magdaug. “We need at least two days.”

There’s always room for a cookie – especially when you bake them yourself!

SurfWriter Girls Sunny and Patti Kishel like to bake cookies for our friends and family, whether it’s classic chocolate chip or decorated Christmas cookies.

Like the Pillsbury Doughboy says:

“Nothing says lovin’ like something from the oven.”

What’s your favorite cookie?

World Gratitude Day – September 21

Celebrate the Good Things in Life!

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

September 21st is World Gratitude Day – a day to express gratitude and appreciation for all the wonderful things to be found in the world.

Started in 1965 in Hawaii – where people traditionally thank Mother Nature for Earth’s bounty, beautiful oceans, green landscapes and the Aloha spirit – World Gratitude Day was adopted by the United Nations in 1977.

Since then it has spread around the globe.

Now, when there is so much divisiveness in the news, SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel think taking a day to focus on all the positive things we have and the beauty around us is time well spent.

What do you have to be grateful for and who do you want to thank?

You may be surprised at how long a list it is!

It’s Girl Scout Cookie season again! And not just any season.

2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the first year Girl Scouts started selling their tasty treats.

1930s

SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel (former Scouts who sold lots of cookies!) were excited to learn the new flavor launched for the Centennial – S’mores (in Crispy and Crunchy versions).

new-smoresWhat could be more fitting? The recipe for that campfire favorite s’mores was first published in 1927 in the magazine Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.

As you probably already know, the cookies are hard to resist. In an average season Girl Scout Cookies generate $800 million in revenues.

That’s a lot of Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Samoas,Caramel deLites and Do-si-dos.

What’s the best way to celebrate Chinese New Year (Jan 28), the Year of the Rooster? With a Moscow Mule.

cock-n-bull-mug-and-rest

Did you know that the Moscow Mule cocktail (the one served in a copper mug) was popularized at Hollywood’s legendary Cock ‘n Bull restaurant on Sunset Blvd.? So, what better drink to toast in Chinese New Year than one associated with a rooster?

A famous watering hole for celebrities – especially the Brits – from the 1930s through the 1980s, the Cock ‘n Bull was a hang out for actor Richard Burton and rockers Jim Morrison and Rod Stewart. Warren Beatty was a regular there, too.

rest-menu

Invented in 1941, the Moscow Mule – a mix of Vodka and ginger beer – got its name from Vodka’s association with Russia and the kick (like a mule!) that comes from the ginger beer.

So, you can make your own Moscow Mule, SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel have a recipe you’ll definitely crow about.

Moscow Mule Recipe

Pour 2 oz. vodka, 3 – 5 oz. ginger beer and a half oz.lime juice into a mug (preferably a copper mug) over ice. Stir and garnish with a lime wedge.

Then you’re ready to chill out like a czar.

Election Day Update

Ban the Bag Passes!

People Voted YES on Proposition 67

Pins supporting the ban of plastic bags and voting Yes on Prop 67.

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

Did you ever wonder what happens to plastic grocery bags after you use them? With 100 billion plastic bags used every year in America, it’s important to know.

plastic-bags-all-around
SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel learned that, all too often, these plastic grocery bags wash into our rivers, lakes, streams, and oceans. Once there, they are ingested by or entangle sea turtles, otters, seals, fish, and birds, who mistake the bags for food.

Later the animals die from the bags or are eaten by other animals, with the plastic bags working their way through the food chain and ultimately being eaten by man.

rise-above-plastics-food-chain

landfill

Even when disposed of properly plastic bags clog our landfills, taking up to a thousand years to biodegrade.

Burning them isn’t an answer either since the plastic bags give off toxic gases.

ban-the-bag-logo

How can we stop this from happening? In California it’s simple. By getting rid of single-use plastic bags. 150 cities and counties in California have already enacted local laws to ban single-use plastic bags.

Now that Yes on 67 has passed this will make it a state-wide ban.
YES on 67 is a common-sense solution to reduce an unnecessary and deadly source of plastic pollution in the environment. It not only protects wildlife and ourselves, but protects our waterways for recreation and tourism. This is vital for our quality of life and for the state’s economy.

beach

Many environmental organizations and others supported YES on 67. These include the Surfrider Foundation (which is dedicated to protecting the world’s oceans, waves and beaches), California Coastal Commission, Sierra Club, The Nature Conservancy, Defenders of WIldlife, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Patagonia, Clif Bar, and more.

Single-use plastic bags are: Unsafe, Unsightly, Unwanted.

vote-yes
Together, with the simple mark on a ballot, the people have spoken to stop the damage caused by single-use plastic bags in California.

“I firmly believe in the idea that each and every one of us can make a concrete difference in the health of our ocean and coasts. When we work together, we can scale that change into something meaningful on the national and global level. Each and every vote does make a difference and you have an opportunity to make your opinion count.”

National Sea Serpent Day

August 7, 2016

Friendly sea serpent in city

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

Get ready for National Sea Serpent Day! It’s a day to celebrate all the mysterious and mythic sea serpents of the deep from the Loch Ness Monster in Scotland to the Midgarosormr of Norse legends – a serpent so big it was said to encircle the earth.

Loch Ness monster

Sailors and others have reported seeing sea serpents for hundreds of years.

Ackland_58.1.2254, 3/21/13, 2:02 PM, 8C, 3654x4135 (63+324), 50%, Feb'13, 1/25 s, R56.7, G29.0, B38.2

Hans_Egede_sea_serpent_1734

In Medieval and Renaissance times (5th to 17th century) cartographers often included sea serpents on the maps and charts they drew.

Sea Monster A

Sightings of “Nessie,” the famed Loch Ness Monster, date back 1500 years. And, in 1850 a sea serpent was reported in Ireland “sunning itself near the Clare coast off Kilkee.” More recently, in 1985 two brothers in San Francisco said they saw a sea serpent at least 60-ft-long swimming in the bay.

Surgeon_s-photo_3273486bmock ness-hoax

Much like UFO sightings, people have debated whether sea serpents are real or even hoaxes made up to fool the public.

Whatever the truth may be, SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel remember another sea serpent seen by many – Cecil, the Seasick Sea Serpent.

TV Beanie.Cecil

In the 1960s he and his sidekick Beany were the stars of the popular Beany and Cecil cartoon show.

Created by Bob Clampett for ABC-TV, the duo were the coolest personalities on television with legions of young fans following their adventures every week.

Bennie and Cecil

The Mattel toy company even made a line of Beany and Cecil toys and lunchboxes that all the kids wanted. Today they sell for big bucks on eBay.

1962-Beany-Cecil lunch pack

So, in honor of National Sea Serpent Day, put on a beany cap and spin the propeller!

And, when you’re at the beach, look around. Who knows what you’ll see?

Eddie Aikau Big Wave Event is a Go!

John John Florence Wins Surf Invitational

Written by SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel

The Eddie Aikau Big-Wave Invitational, one of the most prestigious – and certainly the rarest – surfing events in the world took place on Thursday, February 25, 2016 in Hawaii on Oahu’s North Shore.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Elite surfers from around the globe waited excitedly on standby to hear if the surf conditions were right. They were …and the event was on. With monster waves as high as 60 feet.

Hawaiian surfer John John Florence took first place by catching four enormous waves and earning a total score of 301 points. The second youngest surfer to win the event, Florence, 23, thanked the Aikau family and Quiksilver for sponsoring it and said it was a dream come true to compete against surfers who were his heroes growing up.

Eddie_Aikau wikiNamed after Waimea Bay’s first lifeguard, Eddie Aikau (1946-1978), the invitation-only surfing event has been held just nine times in its 31-year history. That’s because the tournament rules require that open-ocean waves reach a minimum of 20 feet (which translates to a wave face height of 30 or more feet).

Aikau, who loved surfing the Big Waves, is legendary for saving over 500 people as Waimea’s lifeguard. Not one person was lost while he was on duty. No matter how dangerous the surf, Aikau would plunge in to make a rescue, leading Islanders to say of his exploits, “Eddie would go.” Unfortunately, Aikau’s life was cut short when he was lost at sea on a 2,500 mile sailing expedition retracing the ancient Polynesian migration between Hawaii and Tahiti.

Along with this, the International Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach is currently showcasing Aikau in its exhibit: EDDIE GOES! Aikau’s brother Clyde Aikau is shown here with museum chairman Brett Barnes and exhibits director Dave Reynolds, who also designed the event poster.

Nancy Hastings – Great write-up ladies! Proud to report my blood-cousin (My uncle’s son) Steven Estabrook was a judge at this year’s Eddie Aikau contest.  This is the 2nd time he has judged!   My cousin has lived on the north shore of Oahu for over 20 years, so I guess he has made friends with all the right people.  🙂

In the spirit of romance, Dunkin Donuts not only has its coffee pots and cappuccino makers ready to accommodate sweethearts year-round, but for Valentine’s Day it makes special heart-shaped donuts filled with Bavarian Kreme or Vanilla buttercreme.

heart donuts

Mr.

Rub a dub, dub, fill up the tub! Before you know it National Rubber Ducky Day on January 13th will be here. Created and patented by Los Angeles sculptor Peter Ganine in the 1940s, the bright, yellow duck, that has become a familiar sight in bath tubs everywhere, even has its own day now. Who would’ve guessed it? Or that over 50,000,000 rubber duckies have been sold. According to London’s The Sun newspaper, even Queen Elizabeth has one in her tub. As further proof of its wide following, in 2013 the rubber duck was “induckted” into the Toy Hall of Fame, joining an illustrious group of only 52 other toys.

SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel were excited this week when Sunny’s longtime friend Cynthia Mejia-Giudici called to share the news that her daughter Catherine and son-in-law Sean are expecting their first child.

“Sean called to tell me that the baby is due in June,” Cyn said, eager to welcome her first grandchild. “They’re going to be here in Seattle for the holidays and I can’t wait to see them. Catherine’s sisters Monica and India will be here, too. So, it’s going to be a great time for all of us together.”

To make 2015 a better year, SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel would like to see us all reach out the hand of friendship to the people we encounter in our everyday lives.

Putting aside differences and disagreements, now is the time to focus on the things that unite us and to celebrate our shared hopes and dreams.

As writers who are out in the community, SurfWriter Girls are fortunate to meet new people practically everywhere we go…at beach cleanups, talking to small business owners, at civic events, and more.

Think of your own list and all the people with whom you come into contact. How many potential new friends are waiting there? How many old friends are hoping to reconnect? You might be surprised.

If you’d like to find out, it’s easy. Just make the effort. As the saying goes, “To have a friend, you have to be a friend.”

Dale Carnegie

Motivational speaker and author Dale Carnegie, once said, “You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.”

While focusing on friends – both old and new – may not seem like such a big thing, President Woodrow Wilson felt differently. Recognizing the importance of friendship, he stated, “Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together.”

SurfWriter Girls Sunny and Patti definitely agree. Sunny and her friend Cynthia Mejia Giudici have been friends since first grade, staying connected through marriages, divorces, births, deaths, and distance.

Patti and her friends from Culver City High School – Lynn, Linda, Barbara and Mickey – still get together every year for their annual CCHS Girls Thanksgiving Lunch.

CCHS friends

True friendship is like a velvety rose bud that, when nurtured, develops into a thing of beauty. With friends you can share special moments that you delight in, enjoying the small, but important things, that occur and the interesting places where life takes you.

St. ThomasIn the words of noted theologian St. Thomas Aquinas, “Friendship is the source of the greatest pleasures and without friends even the most agreeable pursuits become tedious.”

So, if you want to make a positive difference in 2015 – in your own life and the lives of others – just open your heart and mind and reach out to someone, offering them the gift of friendship.

Now that all the holiday gifts have been unwrapped and put away, this is one more gift that can last a lifetime… turning from silver to gold.

Happy New Year!

“Do you hear what I hear?” sings the Drummer Boy. Everyone at the second annual Silent Disco at Fuzion, December 27th in Huntington Beach, produced by Kaleidoscope Productions, will have a lot to hear…on individual headsets – fifteen DJs playing on three channels.

Event co-planner Ryan Dettmer told SurfWriter Girls Sunny Magdaug and Patti Kishel, “Silent Disco is a new and unique way to experience music. Each person at the event gets a headset that wirelessly connects to the DJs playing and lets them listen to three channels so they can listen to whatever music they want to enjoy.”

Along with the music, there will be Lazer Tag, Live Art, Face Painting, Mini-Bowling, Full Dave and Busters-style Arcade, Beer and Wine Bar, Clothing Vendors, and more!

Venus In Fur on Stage at SCR

Graham Hamilton Gets Wave of Applause

Surfrider Foundation West LA/Malibu Chapter Chairperson Graham Hamilton is temporarily trading in the wave break for the spotlight here in the OC where he is starring in South Coast Repertory Theatre’s production Venus in Fur.

SouthCoastRepertory

Graham Hamilton at Beach

SurfWriter Girl Patti and husband Greg Kishel had front row seats and saw firsthand what a talented actor Hamilton is. “His performance is impressive,” says Patti, “as he changes character and point of view throughout the play and deftly switches back-and-forth between drama and comedy.”

Graham Hamilton and Jaimi Paige in South Coast Repertory's 2014

Playing the role of a stage director trying to cast the perfect leading lady for his upcoming play, Hamilton is joined by multifaceted co-star Jaimi Paige, who bursts into the room on a dark and stormy night – inverted, blown-out umbrella in hand – demanding to audition. Sultry and magnetic, she turns out to be more than she seems…with an agenda of her own.

Written by David Ives and directed by Casey Stangl, Venus in Fur puts a new spin on the “casting couch,” exploring the boundaries of seduction and power, fantasy and reality.

If you’re looking for an intelligent, witty, sexually-provocative play, this is it – a one-act, one-scene, 90 minutes of total entertainment. It runs through October 26. For tickets go online to: scr.org Or call 714-708-5555.
